It is not merely the sticker price that makes a less expensive car more attractive. There are other costs to consider. For instance, in a state where the sales tax is 6.5 percent, the sales tax for an 8000 vehicle is $780 less than a $20,000 vehicle. As many people will finance the sales tax and add it onto their car loan, additional interest will be paid.

Normally, used car loan, if the buyer is financing, the interest rate may be a little more than for a new car. But, even with a slightly higher interest rate, the interest is applied to a much lower loan balance. And while few people will pay cash for a new vehicle, a cash purchase for less than 10k is a possibility. In those cases, a monthly car payment, and monthly interest charges are avoided entirely.

In terms of depreciation of vehicle value, this may be the biggest benefit of buying an older vehicle. Though all vehicles lose value over time, the rate of depreciation is much less. It is not uncommon for a new vehicle to lose 40 percent or more of its value in the first three years.

When buying from a private buyer, the purchaser must often take the seller's word as to the condition of the vehicle. This method of buying can lead to an unhappy experience, with unanticipated major repairs in the near future.
