2016 Ram 1500 vs 2016 Ford F-150

Serving Harrison, Mountain Home, AR , and Branson , MO

Thanks to its popularity and longevity, the Ford F-150 has become synonymous with the American pickup truck. Although it has been around since the immediate post-World War II era, by no means is the F-150 the only vehicle of its ilk in town. On its heels is the Ram 1500, which Chrysler has been producing since the early 1980s. For the 2016 model year, the F-150 and the Ram 1500 are neck-to-neck in the battle for supremacy in the full-size half-ton truck segment. Chrysler’s ride, however, manages to pull away from its Ford counterpart in the three following areas: fuel efficiency, engine power, and cabin quality. It’s not surprising why U.S. News & World Reportnamed the Ram truck as the 2016 Best Full Size Truck for the Money, with the F-150 being one of the runner-ups for the award.

Performance

In a segment that does not place emphasis on reducing the number of trips you make to the gas station, the 2016 Ram 1500 sports remarkable mileage. Indeed, it has the best fuel economy of any full-size pickup in the market. To achieve the Ram’s peak fuel efficiency numbers, which is measured at 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, go with the HFE trim, which allows you to combine the turbocharged 3.0-liter Eco-Diesel V6—which has a generous output of 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque—with an 8-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drivetrain. By comparison, the 2016 Ford F-150—even with its smaller, 2.7-liter V6—can only manage to provide up to 19 mpg in city fuel economy and 26 mpg in highway fuel economy.

Performance continued

At the other end of the Ram truck’s fuel efficiency-minded Eco-Diesel engine is its massive, 5.7-liter HEMI V8. An awesome powerhouse, this gasoline engine can provide 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. The top-tier engine on the 2016 Ford F-150 is the 5.0-liter Coyote V8: smaller—as well as less powerful. The Coyote engine helps the Ford truck peak at 385 horsepower and 387 lb-ft of torque; that’s 10 less horsepower and 23 less lb-ft of torque than the Ram 1500’s premier engine choice.

Interior

In general, automotive writers noted that there are pickup trucks with more upscale cabins than the 2016 Ford F-150. They must have had the 2016 Ram 1500 in mind, because the quality of its interior is listed as one of the vehicle’s main strengths. Chrysler uses premium fabrics for the truck at even its base trim level; and you can enhance the interior with high-quality leather trim choices, which are accompanied by aesthetically pleasing stitching.
